ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Friends and relatives of police officers who have died in the line of duty joined state leaders and law enforcement officials for the annual Police Officers Memorial remembrance ceremony in Albany on Wednesday.
Police personnel gathered at St. Mary's Church for a morning mass then marched to the Empire State Plaza where the ceremony was held at the New York State Police Officers Memorial.
The black granite memorial lists the names of more than 1,300 police officers, state troopers, sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement personnel who have died in the line of duty in New York state. More than half of the officers served with the New York Police Department.
Sixteen officers were added to the memorial on Wednesday, including four who died last year. Some are first responders from 9/11, who died recently of illnesses related to inhaling the dust particles nearly 12 years ago on that tragic day.
