Officials investigating suspicious soda bottle explosion at RPI

TROY, N.Y. - Troy Police are currently investigating an incident on the RPI campus in which a maintenance worker picked up a two liter soda bottle while cleaning a lawn area and was subjected to the bottle bursting as he attempted to place it in a dumpster.

The worker was exposed to an unknown liquid and was immediately transported to the Samaritan Hospital. His injuries do not appear to be serious, keeping in mind the liquid within the bottle has yet to be identified.

Subsequent to the incident, police say an effort was made to locate any further items which could be similarly dangerous. Within a room at Russo Dorm on Beeman Lane, a soda bottle was located which may be of similar nature to the bottle resulting in a chemical reaction.

The dorm has been evacuated and the Capital District Forensic HAZMAT Team has been sent to investigate.

No further details have been released at this time.
