First charged under the SAFE Act pleads not guilty

William Greene (State Police) William Greene (State Police)

MOREAU, N.Y. - A Saratoga County man, the first to be arrested for violating the state's new SAFE Act, appeared in Moreau Town Court Thursday morning.

51-year-old William Greene, of Moreau, pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful transfer of an assault weapon and disposing of a weapon without a background check, both misdemeanors.

Greene was arrested last month after State Police say an undercover officer purchased an assault weapon Police say Greene was attempting to sell through a private group of gun enthusiasts on Facebook. Police were tipped off to the Facebook post by a call made to the NYS Guns Tip line.

Greene's attorney says he has done nothing wrong. "He has every intention of following this case through to the end," Gregory Canale said. "He's a hard working honest citizen who didn't do anything wrong he was trapped in this unconstitutional law."

Many opposed to the SAFE Act gathered outside the courthouse Thursday morning in support of Greene.
