ALBANY, N.Y. -- In an effort to combat what he calls an unprecedented hike in prescription drug abuse, Senator Chuck Schumer is pushing for tighter controls on hydrocodone pain killers.
Schumer launched a campaign Monday to reclassify the drug as a schedule two controlled substance, which would create stronger restrictions on prescribing and storing the painkiller.
The Capital Region has experienced a rash of heroin busts and prescription-drug related crimes in the last few months, and Schumer says prescription opioids are often to blame.
He claims a number of addicts start with drugs like hydrocodone before moving on to heroin.
