Organized walks scheduled to get families into shape

ALBANY, N.Y. - Officials from Blueshield of Northeastern New York and five of the area's major non-profit organizations launched a new initiative called the "Healthy Walking Challenge Partnership" on Tuesday.

The program encourages individuals and families throughout the Capital Region to take small steps toward living healthier lifestyles by taking part in a series of ten organized walks scheduled over the next six months.

Registered walkers at each event will also qualify to win a Kindle Fire HD.

The challenge is open to the public and most charity events have no cost.

Individuals and families can participate by pre-registering for one or all of the walks by visiting www.bsneny.com/hwc. Day-of registration is also available on-site during participating walks.

April 27 - American Cancer Society Bark for Life

Location: The Crossings of Colonie

May 11 - Capital District YMCA Healthy Community Series

Location: Corning Preserve

June 16 - Capital District YMCA Healthy Community Series

Location: Greenbush YMCA

July 13 - Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run/Walk

Location: Six Flags Great Escape

July 20 - Capital District YMCA Healthy Community Series

Location: Collins Park in Scotia

August 18 - Capital District YMCA Healthy Community Series

Location: Troy YMCA
