UAlbany ends contract with dining services

ALBANY, N.Y. - The State Department of Labor has announced the closing of Chartwells Dining Services in Albany, affecting almost 500 employees.

Chartwells Dining Services at the University at Albany, at 1400 Washington Avenue, has a closing date of June 30, 2013 due to a loss of contract with the university. UAlbany's University Auxiliary Services Board of Directors has awarded a five-year food service contract to Sodexo, instead.

Chartwells has been contracted with UAlbany since 2000.

The Department of Labor says the lay-offs will commence on Thursday, April 25, and will occur in phases through the end of the closing. A total of 471 employees will be affected.

UAlbany tells the NEWS CENTER those employees will be offered a job with the new service provider, however it's unclear how many will accept.

The company is represented by a union.

UAlbany says the choice to bring in Sodexo comes after a seven-month vendor search process which included the review of three vendor bids.
