Fifth grader hit by truck on the way to school

COLONIE, N.Y. – A 5th grade student was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital after being struck by a truck while crossing the street in front of Sand Creek Middle School at around 7:30 Monday morning.

Ten-year-old Madison Almonte was treated on the scene, at the intersection of Iris Lane and Sand Creek Road, for non-life threatening injuries. She received further medical examination at the hospital, including a CAT scan, for precautionary measures. She is expected to make a full recovery.

The Colonie Police Department investigated the accident, where witnesses stated that the student ran out in front of an eastbound vehicle. Police said the area where Almonte was struck was a short distance from an active town-employed crossing guard. The driver of the vehicle, 46-year-old Mark Battista of Colonie, was not expected to be charged in the accident.

According to a statement from the school, counselors would be made available to assist students and staff members who may need additional support.
