Schuylerville woman hospitalized after hitting utility pole while fleeing police

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A Schuylerville woman is in the hospital after colliding with a tree and utility pole while trying to evade police.

At 5:00 p.m. on Friday a State Police Wilton trooper attempted to stop a 1997 GMC Yukon on Sisson Road in the Town of Moreau for speeding. The driver, later determined to be Ashlee M. Sarro, 30, of Schuylerville, N.Y. refused to comply and the trooper began a pursuit.

The pursuit continued onto Route 32 and then Route 50 south in the Town of Wilton where it was discontinued for safety concerns due to the suspects reckless driving and the heavy traffic area.

Troopers lost sight of the vehicle, but as they approached the entrance of the Wilton Mall, numerous motorists directed the troopers to the mall parking lot. They entered the parking lot to ascertain if the suspect was attempting to avoid detection in the crowded area. They were not able to locate the vehicle until after it had struck a tree and then a utility pole while trying to exit the mall onto Loudon Road.

The suspect, who sustained a laceration to her head, exited the vehicle and was attempting to flee on foot as troopers arrived on scene. She was taken into custody and subsequently treated at the scene by Wilton Fire and EMS then airlifted by MedFlight to Albany Medical Center due to the injuries she sustained in the collision with the utility pole.

A 42-year-old male was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the incident, but was uninjured and not charged.

During the investigation, it was determined that Sarro's driving privileges were suspended and she is the subject of seven criminal warrants from agencies throughout the Capital District. She had also side swiped an uninvolved vehicle on Route 50 after the Troopers lost sight of her. There were no injuries stemming from that collision.

Sarro is expected to be released from Albany Medical Center on April 21, and she will be arraigned on charges.
