Adirondack 46ers hiking group may scrap letters

Posted:

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) - The Adirondack 46ers are considering scrapping the tradition of letter-writing to document climbs necessary for membership.

The group has always required people to send journal entries to the club historian documenting their climbs of all 46 Adirondack summits over 4,000 feet. But 46ers President Sally Hoy tells the Adirondack Daily Enterprise that the club's surge in popularity in recent years has made it too difficult to process all the letters.

Under proposed changes, people starting on their quest to climb all 46 High Peaks will be required to fill out an online questionnaire after they finish. People in the midst of their quest can continue sending in letters.

Hoy said the 46ers will discuss possible changes to the policy during its annual spring meeting in Lake Placid in May.
