Shen lacrosse coach resigns after allegations of verbal abuse

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – A high school coach in Clifton Park has resigned after school officials began an investigation into allegations that he was verbally abusive to his players.

The Shenendehowa School District confirms that Charles Holohan, head coach of the boy's lacrosse team, submitted his resignation effective immediately.

Coach Jason Gifford will serve as head coach for the remainder of the season.

Shenendehowa Athletic Director Chris Culnan told NEWS CENTER on Thursday he began receiving complaints from parents and players last weekend. Those complaints focused on verbal comments made by Holohan to players during practices.

"I can tell you unequivocally that he did nothing to endanger a student athlete physically. There are also allegations of abusive language towards players. That's what we are looking into right now," said Culnan.

Superintendent Dr. L. Oliver Robinson released the following statement:

"Whether in the classroom, hallways, athletic fields/stands or performance venues, the district endeavors to cultivate and foster an environment that is based on dignity, respect, and civility by and among students, staff and the community.

This is not only critically important for the safety and welfare of all involved, it is also to ensure that the quality of the experience for our students takes precedent. It is that positive experience for our students in all learning environments that defines the core of our values and beliefs as a district. The objective steps taken to resolve this matter exemplifies our commitment to excellence.

We wish our lacrosse team the best for another successful season."
