Construction takes over Capital Region roadways

Posted:

ALBANY, N.Y. – As the Capital Region begins to see snow melt and temperatures break 50 degrees, drivers will soon experience a traffic slowdown across the region as road crews get to work on several projects.

On April 1st projects begin on the Latham Circle Bridges, the Congress Street Bridge, I-90 in Rensselaer County, and more.

Below, the NEWS CENTER has compiled an at-a-glance cheat sheet for construction projects beginning the weekend.

Latham Circle Bridges:

A $7.4 million project to replace the bridges at the Latham Traffic Circle is under way, and weekday lane closures will begin on April 1.

The bridges at the circle carry Troy Schenectady Road (Route 2) over New Loudon Road (Route 9) in the Albany County town of Colonie.

Start Date: April 1, 2013

Expected Completion Date: August 2013

Closures: Because this project will coincide with the major weekend construction work on the Twin Bridges, NYSDOT will limit lane closures on Route 9 and Route 2 to weekdays until the Twin Bridges work is completed. Lane closures on Route 2 will occur only during off-peak hours.

Work on portions of the Latham Circle project will be performed during the week at night to lessen the impact on motorists and businesses.

During the 60-day summer construction period, trucks will be detoured away from Latham Circle, since the lanes on the circle will be too narrow during this time to accommodate trucks. These truck detours will be signed and will direct trucks on routes around the construction.

Congress Street Bridge:

Construction will resume on the Congress Street Bridge carrying Route 2 over Interstate 787 and the Hudson River between Troy, Rensselaer County and Watervliet, Albany County.

Start Date: April 1, 2013

Expected Completion Date: Fall

Closures: Beginning on April 1, one lane in each direction will be closed to traffic.  One sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians through the duration of the project.  A signed detour will be installed for truck traffic, directing them to use the Green Island Bridge between Green Island and Troy.

Rensselaer County I-90 bridge replacement:

A $4.8 million project to replace the two bridges carrying I-90 over the Moordener Kill in the town of Schodack, will begin Monday, April 1.

Start Date: April 1, 2013

Expected Completion Date: Early May

Closures: Traffic in both directions on I-90 will be reduced by one lane between Exit 11 and 12 beginning Monday morning as the contractor builds crossover lanes in the median of I-90. When completed by early May, these crossover lanes will shift traffic heading east onto the westbound bridge. The westbound bridge will then carry two lanes of traffic heading east and one lane of traffic heading west.

Motorists are encouraged to use Route 9 as an alternate route. Route 9 runs nearly parallel to I‑90 between Exits 11 and 12.

I-787 Rehab project:

Local traffic will be impacted by the restart of an ongoing project to rehabilitate Interstate 787 between exits 3B and 4 in downtown Albany.

Start Date: April 1, 2013

Expected Completion Date: End of summer 2013

Closures: Temporary nighttime lane closures will begin April 1 on southbound I-787. Concrete barriers will be installed by mid-April that will reduce the three-lane southbound interstate to two lanes until the end of the summer.  Crews will work two shifts to complete work more quickly.

Route 162 in Root, Montgomery County:

Route 162 over railroad tracks in Root, Montgomery County Work will begin.

Start Date: April 1, 2013

Expected Completion Date:

Closures: The bridge will be open to one-way alternating traffic during construction.

Twin Bridges:

The second phase of a $29 million project to replace the decks on the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Bridge — commonly known as the Twin Bridges — carrying the Northway (Interstate 87) over the Mohawk River will begin on Friday night, April 5.

Start Date: April 5, 2013

Expected Completion Date: Work is expected to be completed before Memorial Day weekend

Closures: Northbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane and two southbound lanes will be shifted onto the northbound span, which was the span that was renovated this past fall. The southbound bridge will be closed at 10 p.m. on Fridays, reopening before the rush hours on Monday mornings.
