SCHENECTADY, N.Y – A 24-year-old man is under arrest after hitting a utility
pole and tearing up a cemetery's fence while allegedly driving drunk.
According to police, in between Catherine and Moyston streets at around 1:30
a.m. Saturday, a car driven by Adebaye Lindsey, 24, severed a utility pole
before crashing through the gates into Vale Cemetery.
Scott Crowder's son lives in an apartment across the
street and he says his son called him immediately after talking to police. Crowder says his son heard the crash, opened
his window, and called 911.
"The fact that when he opened the widows and was
calling the police the gentleman yelled up that he didn't want him to call the
police, my son was already connected with 911," said Crowder.
Lindsey then fled the scene on foot.
"He ran down Martin Street and my son followed on
the roof because he could see where he went.
When the police came he told them where he was and they were able to
apprehend him," said Crowder.
Police arrested Lindsey at the intersection of Albany and
Steuben streets, charging him with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle
National Grid workers were on scene Saturday repairing
the utility pole, though the cemetery fence remains mangled on the front lawn.
Police say that Lindsey sustained no serious injuries in
the crash, and now sits in Schenectady County Jail without bail.
