ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The Associated Medical Schools of New York says 2,160 graduating medical students are heading toward to residency training programs. More than half will remain in the state.

The consortium of New York state's 16 public and private medical schools says 97% of their students have received a residency "match" for programs that begin in July.

According to the National Resident Matching Program, a record 25,463 applicants nationwide matched to residency programs. U.S. medical school seniors accounted for 16,390 of those slots.

Jo Wiederhorn of the New York group says more students are focusing on primary care disciplines that include internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology.

She says 188 students will go into emergency medicine this year. That specialty is in high demand.
