Tech Valley High, East Greenbush Police hold lock down drill

By Nicole Papay

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. - Tech Valley High School invited the East Greenbush Police to the school Wednesday morning to participate in their annual lock down drill. They did it to make sure that everything at the school runs as smoothly and safely as possible.

Officer Peter Partak, of the East Greenbush Police Department said, "I'm here as an observer, to make sure that all proper procedures are being followed and to give any constructive feedback if necessary."

Schools are obligated to perform safety drills each year, but this time Tech Valley wanted someone watching for areas of improvement.

Principal Dan Liebert said, "We want to make sure that our security is as tight as it can be and that we're prepared for any possible contingencies."

Getting police inside the school during a drill also allows the officers a better understanding of the layout of the building. Officer Partak said, "In case something does happen, we as police officers need to know where we're going, how we get there, and what's the quickest way to get to the threat."

Police checked the doors throughout the school and looked in each classroom window, to make sure everyone would be hidden from view in case of an intruder. After the drill, we caught back up with Officer Partak, "We went through, we checked all the rooms in the building, all the students were hidden, and everyone was in a safe, secure position so, I'm very pleased with what I saw today."

Principal Liebert was pleased as well, and is glad he can show students safety tactics that they can take with them, whether it be to college or to the workplace, "It's an opportunity for us to show our students, to teach them the importance of being prepared and at the same time to not be fearful." This is the first time since the school opened 6 years ago that police have taken part in the lockdown drill, and their good report today shows that the staff and students are prepared in the case of an emergency.
