Northway Twin Bridges construction begins Friday night
ALBANY, N.Y. - Phase two of the construction project to repair the Twin Bridges on the Northway begins Friday night.
Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York State Department of Transportation announced the second phase of a $29 million project to replace the decks on the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Bridge — commonly known as the Twin Bridges — carrying the Northway over the Mohawk River will begin on Friday night, April 5.
The construction will take place at night so the disruptions are minimal to drivers; an initiative of the Governor's Driver's First Initiative, which prioritizes the convenience of motorists and ensures that disruptions are as minimal as possible to drivers at highway and bridge projects across the state.
The decks of the northbound and southbound structures are being replaced through Governor Cuomo's NY Works program. The replacement of the northbound deck was completed last fall. This spring's work will replace the southbound deck.
night begins the first of many nights of work on the twin bridges, work that
will continue through Memorial Day weekend. While the Department of
Transporation is purposely doing the construction during the off-peak hours,
there will inevitably be some headaches for drivers.

steel beams. The work will begin each Friday night and continue through
"This is probably the best of a
bad situation, it has to be done," says Pyskadlo. "There is so
much volume on the northway going north and south, that there really isn't a
happy medium for this."
Start Date: April 5, 2013
Expected Completion Date: Work is expected to be completed before Memorial Day weekend
Closures:Northbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane and two southbound lanes will be shifted onto the northbound span, which was the span that was renovated this past fall. The southbound bridge will be closed at 10 p.m. on Fridays, reopening before the rush hours on Monday mornings.
