Investigators say this fire in Schaghticoke was set by a suspected arsonist(s). (NEWS10)
SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. - Investigators with the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office say they have at least one person of interest who may be responsible for setting more than 20 fires over the past five years.
During a press conference Tuesday, investigators say the connection to the possible arson suspects was made after a fire was started in a garage and spread to a home in Schaghticoke last week.
Officials say the fire was starting around 2:30 a.m. and displaced five people, including two children.
Sgt. Shane Holcomb of the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office says this person, or persons, has been causing damage since 2008, and it is again escalating. Holcomb is asking for the public's help.
"There may be people out there who have knowledge of the person who may be involved in this, someone close to that individual may have noticed changes in that persons demeanor, changes in their appearance, behavior, alcohol or drug abuse," said Sgt. Holcomb.
Investigators are asking that anyone with information about the suspect(s) responsible for starting the fires to contact the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office at 266-1980.
