WHITEHALL, N.Y. – Whitehall police will take to Twitter Friday in 140 characters or less as part of a global effort to bring attention to the use of social media by law enforcement.
The 24-hr Tweet-a-thon includes more than 100 agencies throughout the U.S., Canacda, UK, Sweden, Iceland and Australia. Agencies will use the hastag #poltwt for the event.
"We are excited to bring together police agencies around the world in this first of its kind social media event," said Lauri Stevens, founder of LAwS Communications and organizer of the Tweet-a-thon. "We hope it sends the message to non-law enforcement that their police officers are up to speed with social media, and that they should use the channel to talk with police officers and to be stewards of public safety."
Whitehall Police Patrolman Tim Hardy said, "By participating in this global event, we hope to bring recognition globally and locally to the law enforcement presence on social media outlets and the power they have in today's world, even agencies as small as we are."
