Union College holds ceremony for student killed in East Greenbush crash

Posted: Updated:

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Union College held a ceremony to honor the life of a student who was killed in a car crash on Wednesday.

Sean Murphy died when he was thrown from a vehicle that slammed into a tree in East Greenbush.

The driver, 22-year-old Mark Fusco, has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated. The son of the Rensselaer Police Chief, Fusco had recently become a member of the department himself. He is still in the hospital, and listed in fair condition recovering from the crash.

Among the speakers at the service were the President of Union College, Stephen Ainlay, and Murphy's Fraternity brothers.

"I'm still trying to come to grips with it, the fact that he's actually gone, you know what I mean, I can't even imagine what the seniors are going through," said fraternity brother Jack Steinharter.

There will also be a moment of silence before the start of tonight's hockey game against Dartmouth College.

The Rensselaer County District Attorney tells NEWS10 that charges against Fusco may be upgraded. Our reporter Christine O'Donnell reached out to the Rensselaer Police Department for comment this afternoon, but did not receive a response by deadline.
