SELKIRK, N.Y. – A 59-year-old Selkirk man is under arrest after police say he violated an order of protection and struck a child.

Bethlehem Police Department arrested Carl J. Hilgers, 59, of 22 Skyridge Lane, Selkirk, following a complaint Thursday that he struck his 3-year-old child in the face.  The investigation revealed he became upset with the child and slapped the child in the face leaving redness and fingerprint markings.  His actions violated an order of protection which was in effect for the child's safety.

Hilgers was arrested without incident and charged with felony Criminal Contempt in the 1st-Degree, misdemeanor Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Harassment in the 2nd-Degree.

He was arraigned in Bethlehem Town Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility. Hilgers is scheduled to appear in Bethlehem Town Court on March 19, 2013 at 4 p.m. for a preliminary hearing.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
