CHAZY, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a farmer escaped
injury when an Amtrak passenger train hit his farm tractor after it got
stuck on the tracks near the Canadian border in northern New York.
State police tell the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh that 42-year-old Lawrence Nichols of Champlain was driving the
tractor across a crossing on private land in the town of Chazy early
Wednesday afternoon when the vehicle got stuck.
Troopers say a southbound Amtrak train wasn't able to stop in time and plowed into the tractor, destroying it.
Nichols got out of the way as the train approached and wasn't injured. No one on the train was hurt.
