Troy woman sentenced to 8 years after burglary, killing victims dog

ALBANY, NY - District Attorney P. David Soares announced Thursday that Khadijah Hopkins, 26, of Troy, was sentenced to 8 years in State Prison to be followed by 5 years of Post Release Supervision this morning for her role in burglarizing a home and setting a fire that killed a dog who was secured in a crate.

On Jan. 17, 2013 Hopkins pleaded guilty to one Count of Felony Burglary in the 2nd-Degree, and one Count of Felony Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. She was additionally sentenced to a concurrent 2 years for the animal cruelty charge.

On Nov. 15, 2012, Hopkins illegally entered a residence of an acquaintance in the Town of Colonie and stole several items from the home. Before leaving, she set the house on fire with the victim's dog locked in a cage in the living room of the home. The dog died as a result of the fire.

A thorough investigation by the Colonie Police Department uncovered a connection between the victim and Hopkins and they were able to recover some of the stolen items at the defendant's mothers residence as well as a local game store where some of the stolen items were sold.

"Stealing and destroying a person's property is damaging enough, but taking the life of an innocent pet is unforgivable," said DA David Soares. "Hopkins will have 8 long years in State Prison to think about her actions."
