Richard J. Aubin (Prior mugshot from New York State Police)
NORTH HUDSON, N.Y. - A high-speed pursuit and violent struggle with police led to state police shooting and killing a man in Essex County Tuesday night.
State Police in Schroon Lake attempted to stop a black 2005 Chevrolet
Colorado pickup truck traveling southbound on the Northway for speeding around 5 p.m. Tuesday. The
operator failed to comply and a pursuit was initiated and the vehicle eventually
exited the northway and continued north on Route 9. Spike strips were
deployed by State Police on Route 9 in the town of North Hudson causing the
suspect vehicle to be disabled just south of Liberty Road.
The
suspect fled into the woods and a foot pursuit was initiated by two Troopers
that had been pursuing him. When the suspect was located, a violent struggle
ensued where Troopers used OC Pepper spray which was not effective. The suspect
then attempted to gain access to a Trooper's firearm which led
to the other Trooper firing his firearm, striking and killing
the suspect at the scene.
The suspect has been tentatively identified as Richard J. Aubin, age 28, of
Ausable Forks. An autopsy is scheduled at Albany Medical Center on Wednesday.
The
Troopers involved in the incident were transported to Glens Falls Hospital and treated for injuries
sustained during the confrontation and released.
Essex County District Attorney Kristy Sprague was notified and is assisting in
the investigation.
The Troop B Violent Crimes Investigation Team, Forensic Investigation Team, and
Collision Reconstruction Team all responded to the scene to assist. Also
assisting were New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police,
Essex County Sheriff's Department, and Moriah Police Department.
The investigation into this
incident is ongoing.
