1st virtual school in Mass. closing

Posted: Updated:
GREENFIELD, Mass. (AP) - The first virtual school in Massachusetts is shutting down after the Greenfield School Committee voted last week not to submit an application to the state to run it.

The vote first reported by The Recorder of Greenfield means that the Massachusetts Virtual Academy, a 3-year-old school that teaches 470 students, will close June 30.

A law passed in January gives the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education authority over Massachusetts virtual schools.

The locally run Greenfield school would have been overseen by the state and run as a charter school, and 1 of the objections was giving up local control of the school.

The school served a student population who for certain reasons, including medical, could not attend a traditional bricks & mortar school. Students communicated with state-certified teachers online.
