RENSSELAER, N.Y. - The Doane Stuart School in Rensselaer went into lockdown
for a short time Monday morning after a man showed school officials a gun while
on campus.
Pierre R. Jeune, 44, of Hudson, was taken into custody by
Schenectady Police after the incident. Jeune was charged with Criminal
Possession of a Weapon in the 4th-Degree. He does have a permit for
the weapon, but it is illegal to carry it on school property.
According to school officials, Jeune had a small car
accident a week ago or so on school property. He was telling a school official Monday
about the incident and that he felt threatened and then showed the school
official he had a hand gun.
The school notified the Rensselaer Police about the incident,
but when the police arrived Jeune had already left school.
Police did contact him on his cell phone and asked him to
return to the school, which he did, and he was taken into custody without
incident with assistance of the New York State Police, North Greenbush Police,
and the East Greenbush Police.
In a statement from the school, Head of School Lisa Brown says:
"The most important thing to know about this event is that our lockdown
preparations allowed everyone to know what to do in the event of an emergency.
Your children -- our students -- were safe at all times and conducted
themselves with maturity and seriousness of purpose, exactly as we would expect
them to do. They were spectacular, as was the response from our faculty, staff
and the Rensselaer Police. Please do not hesitate to call of you have any
questions."
