Saratoga, Shen take disciplinary action in bullying incident

Posted: Updated:

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Both Saratoga Springs and Shenendehowa High Schools have taken disciplinary action after a championship hockey game at Union College between the two schools escalated to more than just a friendly high school rivalry.

On Thursday, Shen confirms that "a couple of students were suspended as a result of the conflict that ensued at the Shen-Saratoga hockey game last week." They would not say the exact number of students, nor what that suspension included.

Saratoga Springs City Schools Superintendent Michael Piccirillo also said Wedneday that one Saratoga Springs High School student was suspended from school and two others were barred from attending any after-school or extracurricular high school events for the rest of the school year after the hockey game versus Shenendehowa last Thursday.

The names of the students involved will not be released.

During the rivalry game, Saratoga High students and Shen students were said to be throwing verbal attacks at one another, some directed toward Bailey Wind, one of the survivors of the deadly Northway accident that killed her boyfriend 17-year-old Chris Stewart, a senior at Shen.

Shen has also responded to the incident on their school website, saying their investigation found the situation began on social media sites in which students were "sharing derogatory exchanges that are disrespectful and irresponsible."

The statement also admits that "Shen initiated the throwing of objects by tossing two bottles at the Saratoga fans."

The statement continues saying: "Students must realize that under changes in the code of conduct enacted after the cyberbullying amendment to the DASA legislation, they can be held responsible for actions taken via the social media especially when it impacts school events. We expect our students to be respectful, responsible and good citizens at all times. Parents, if you can't monitor what your children are posting on social media sites, please talk to them about your expectations and the potential consequences that can come from it when inappropriate postings cause conflicts in school."
