Troy teen apologizes after actions send school into lockdown

Posted: Updated:

TROY, N.Y. - A school around the RPI campus went into lockdown Tuesday afternoon after a couple of men were seen walking near the school with some type of 'gun' and threatening the use of what the caller believed to be BB or pellet guns.

16-year-old Jordan Reid, a suspect arrested in the incident, apologized Tuesday night saying, "I just wanted to say sorry to everyone who suffered from it."

Reid wanted to apologize to students and teacher at the Troy elementary school, School #2, after police say he and 19-year-old Terrance Huneau caused the school to go into lockdown mode for about 40 minutes.

Investigators say staff inside the school noticed Reid and Huneau walking on school grounds with what looked like firearms. Police say they threatened a group by pointing the pistol and rifle at them.

"Right from the start our officers were alerted these could be real weapons," Troy Police Captain John Cooney said.

Officers then set up a perimeter around the school. "Their drills and the extra training Newton brought us certainly paid off," said Cooney.

Detectives found the largest of the two weapons near the schooll, turning out to be a paintball gun. The second pistol, a pellet gun, was found on one of the suspects according to police.

"I was just playing around with a gun it's not like I was walking around with a real gun," said Reid. He tells NEWS10 he wasn't thinking at the time about where he was with the pistol. "I didn't mean to make a scene and make cops come over there," he said.

His mother, who wanted him to go on camera and apologize to the community, says she's hoping he will understand the severity of the situation; one Captain Cooney says could have ended with deadlier consequences.

Troy Police responded to the incident just before 1:15 p.m. and located the two teens, who were confirmed to be carrying an air rifle in the area of School #2 on Tenth Street at Middleburgh.

The school was in full lockdown. No one was hurt.  Information was developed as to the possibility of the two suspects being in a nearby residence, which was investigated while police units remained deployed at the school.  Police say the two subjects, along with a female in possession of marihuana, were located and arrested. A pellet pistol and a paintball rifle were recovered and seized. Police are expected to release additional information regarding the suspects and charges.
