Mass. highway closed after rail tanker cars der

Posted: Updated:

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - Police have closed a two-mile section of U.S. Route 5 in West Springfield after two train tanker cars, one carrying a flammable liquid, derailed on an overhead rail trestle.

West Springfield Police Capt. Thomas Wilkinson tells WWLP-TV one of the tankers is empty and the loaded tanker isn't leaking. He said the tankers are leaning on the trestle, but the situation is stable Thursday night.

No one was injured and no evacuations have been ordered. The derailment happened just after 6 p.m.

Wilkinson said the road between the Memorial Avenue rotary and the North End Bridge was closed because the trestle has some structural damage. He said it's likely the railroad company, CSX, will bring in heavy equipment to clear the accident. He said it's not known how long the road may be closed.
