Skidmore cancels men's soccer season due to hazing

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Skidmore College has announced the men's soccer team spring season has been cancelled following an investigation into reports of hazing.

According to a letter issued Thursday by the Skidmore President Philip Glotzbach, saying that Campus Safety investigated the alleged hazing and underage drinking on the team, and has initiated disciplinary proceedings involving 28 Skidmore students, including 24 current soccer team members. A number of the team members face suspensions for significant portions of the fall season as well.

Glotzbach says the investigation was prompted after learning of a team initiation on November 30, 2012 referred to by some as "Rookie Night." No students were injured during this event; however Glotzbach says the actions of the team were inexcusable.

The team was told of the season's cancellation Thursday.

"All student-athletes sign a pledge at the start of every season stating that they will not engage in any form of hazing. They are public ambassadors for the College; as such, we expect them to represent Skidmore at its very best. In failing to honor that pledge, the students in question have not only endangered a number of their fellow students but also threatened the core values that bind and undergird our entire community," Glotzbach said in his announcement.

Results of the investigation were handed to the Saratoga Springs Police Department and Saratoga County District Attorney.

Glotzbach says the team has cooperated fully with the investigation and the players are taking responsibility for their actions.
