LATHAM, N.Y. -- Fire destroyed a house Thursday in Latham,
sending an elderly couple to the hospital and killing their pets.
The fire broke out at about 2 p.m. on Eastern Avenue.
Family members tell NEWS10 Jack and Judy Bassett escaped the burning house, but
tried to go back inside for their pet bird and two dogs -- only to be turned
away by the intense smoke.
Judy was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation, Jack
was taken for observation. The three animals died and the house is mostly
gutted.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
