Police: Suspect pretended to be Water Dept. employee to enter home

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Schenectady Police Department is investigating an incident in which a man claiming to be a member of the city's Water Department was able to gain access into a city residence.

Police say around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday the male suspect knocked on the door of an elderly female resident in the 1500-block of California Avenue claiming to be a city employee from the Water Department.

The resident let him in but became suspicious of the suspect, who left when confronted by the homeowner.

The suspect is described as a short white male, with earrings; last seen wearing a black or dark blue jacket marked "Water Department." The suspect was also wearing a black or dark blue knit cap.

The resident was not injured in this incident and no property was missing.

The Water Department did not have anyone working in that area during the time of the incident.

The Schenectady Police Department encourages all of its residents to use caution when allowing strangers who are seeking access to their home.
