CATSKILL, N.Y. – Officials are investigating an early morning fire that occurred at Sunrise Farms on Cauterskill Road in Catskill on Sunday.
The fire was contained to one hen-house, which was completely destroyed, killing around 7,500 - 8,000 laying hens.
The fire call came in at around 2:00 a.m. Sunday and took the Kiskatom Fire Department four hours to extinguish. The time length was due to the construction of the hen-house, which made it unsafe for humans to enter.
The hen-house had to be disassembled and torn down in the process of fighting the flames, in order to extinguish the fire inside.
The Palenville Fire Department was called in for assistance in putting out the fire and in the demolition of the hen-house's structure.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
