LATHAM, N.Y. – An advocate for women's ordination and other gender justice issues in the Catholic Church will be speaking in Albany Sunday.
Father Roy Bourgeois' will speak as part of an Upstate New York Call to Action, "Speaker's Along the Thruway" tour.
Upstate New York Call to Action is a local chapter or a Chicago-based national organization calling for reform in the Catholic Church.
Father Bourgeois recently received notice from the Maryknoll order of priests and brothers, of which he's been a member for 46 years, stating he has been dismissed from the order and the priesthood at the direction of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith. The order comes from his outspokenness on women's ordination and participation in a woman's ordination ceremony.
‘While we applaud Fr. Roy for his courage in following his conscience, the severity of his punishment stands in stark contrast to the treatment afforded to many clergy credibly accused in the sex abuse scandals," said Steve Powers, an Albany leader of Upstate NY Call to Action, which is sponsoring the event. "It is shocking to see a priest of 40 years treated like this while many of those who damaged and endangered children are treated much more leniently.
