Pittsfield attorney proposes Styrofoam ban in city
PITTSFIELD, Mass. - A petition has been filed by a local attorney to ban the popular food and beverage product of Styrofoam in the City of Pittsfield.
The proposal by attorney Rinaldo Del Gallo has gone before Pittsfield City Council presented the ban because he says Styrofoam products, like cups and containers, are harmful to the environment and an easy substitute would be paper cups.
Juice N' Java on North Street already use paper cups and would support the ban on Styrofoam. But down a few blocks at Hot Harry's, Styrofoam cups and containers are used and the company that makes them, Dart Containers, both say the product is better than paper.
Del Gallo says a ban, if passed, would be legal saying "they can basically do anything for the public good so long as they didn't contravene state law and there's nothing in state law that prohibits a town from banning Styrofoam."
The city council will hold a public comment meeting on the matter. That meeting has not yet been scheduled.
