MALTA, N.Y. -- GlobalFoundries took its first step towards expanding its FAB8 facility at a meeting Tuesday night.
The potential second manufacturing facility, called FAB8.2, would more than double GlobalFoundries' manufacturing space, which the company says would bring thousands of jobs to the area.
Before a move can be made, permission is needed to amend zoning for the site, so GlobalFoundries put together an application asking for the adjustments.
"It's bigger and a little taller than what is currently permitted, so we'd like them to adjust the zoning to allow us to potentially build it," said GlobalFoundries spokesperson Travis Bullard.
Malta's town supervisor left the meeting optimistic but recognizes there are growing pains including noise and traffic complaints. Still he remains positive they can have it all.
GlobalFoundries is asking or approval of the amendments by May. From there they hope to get site permits by June.
