TROY, N.Y. – Two teens have been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of a man at the Corliss Park Apartments in Troy Monday night.
Troy police say they have arrested 17-year-old Keith Ferguson and 16-year-old Ahziarh Carter, both of Troy, for the stabbing which occurred shortly after 6 p.m. Monday at the apartments in building number 19, apartment 6. The suspects were captured on the apartment complex's surveillance camera
After arriving at the scene, officers found the male victim, identified as 21-years-old Takim Smith, in critical condition with life-threatening injuries to his upper torso and body. Smith was treated and transported by the Troy Fire Department to St. Mary's Hospital.
Smith, a Lansingburgh High School graduate, died of his injuries late Monday, according to Captain Dan DeWolf of Troy Police.
This incident was Troy's first murder of the year.
Smith is described as a "good kid" by family and friends. His family says he was visiting his infant son at the apartment complex before heading to work when he was killed.
Family says Smith and the suspects all knew one another; the "grew up together," they said.
Smith's grandfather tells NEWS10 they believe the motive of the stabbing was money, as he had just received a large sum of money in a medical settlement. Police say they are taking this info consideration and the investigation is in its early stages.
The suspects were arraigned Tuesday morning and have also each been charged with first-degree robbery. They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded to the Rensselaer County Jail.
