ALBANY, N.Y. - The New York State Thruway Authority/Canal Corporation tells NEWS10 they plan to layoff 234 employees in efforts to save $20 million.
The Thruway Authority says they sent out an email to their nearly 3,000 employees Tuesday stating that they will be proceeding with layoffs. Letters will go out on Thursday to the 234 employees affected by the layoffs.
The Thruway Authority says the layoffs will take effect in early April. They say no management or confidential employees will be affected because of previous pay freezes.
The civil service laws make it difficult as some employees with seniority will be allowed to "bump" other employees.
Over the last several years, they have eliminated several hundred positions through attrition to save money. They say salaries and benefits make up 57 percent of the Thruway's budget, which totals over $977 million.
