LATHAM, N.Y. - A pair of school janitors in Latham were recognized as heroes Tuesday night for saving a
man's life.
Mike Hiebert and Scott Vernafay are custodians at Boght Hills Elementary in the North Colonie Central School District. Two weeks ago, the school's gym was being used after-hours by some
adults for a basketball game.
One of those players, a 58-year-old man, began to suffer a heart attack
on the court, and Heibert and Vernafay sprang into action performing CPR on the man with the
school's automated electronic defibrillator until EMS was able to arrive.
On Tuesday night, the two humble heroes were recognized at North Colonie's Central School board meeting for their quick thinking.
"They exercised tremendous judgment, tremendous cool, tremendous grace in a a
very stressful situation and saved an individuals life, said Superintendent Joseph Corr. "And for that his family
is very grateful. We are very grateful as a district to have such wonderful
employees."
While Hiebert and Vernafay appreciated the recognition, the two men were anxious
to get back to work and get the school ready for Wednesday.
The man who they assisted is said to be doing well.
