State Police unveil new radio system in W. Mass.

RUSSELL, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts State Police are set to activate a new digital radio system in western Massachusetts that will enhance public safety through improved communications.

Department Superintendent Col. Timothy Alben is scheduled to unveil the system Tuesday at the State Police barracks in Russell.

The new system will improve communications between Troop B, which covers the western third of the state, adjacent Troops, as well as with statewide State Police radio channels, such as those used by tactical units.

The system also will provide enhanced coverage for portable police radios.

In addition to patrolling state highways and investigating crimes, gang activity, and narcotics trafficking, troopers with Troop B perform many of the duties in small rural towns that local departments play in larger towns.
