NISKAYUNA, N.Y. -- Police in Niskayuna have a mystery on their hands -- how the body of a missing local man ended up in a heavily wooded area.
A body was removed from a wooded area on River Road near Rosendale. Niskayuna Police say the victim had been missing since Friday, and neighbors in the area are shocked.
Lisa Carter and her wife were surprised Saturday morning to see Niskayuna police close off the road and put up crime scene tape near their home.
"Probably between three or four o'clock this afternoon it looked liked--it appeared like they pulled a body out of the woods," said Carter.
The couple watched from their upstairs window and recorded the police activity on Carter's phone.
According to Niskyauna police, they received a call of a deceased male found in a wooded area off River and Rivendale Roads early in the day.
The victim has been identified as a local man, 62-year-old Michael T. Wallender.
Carter says police asked if she or her wife had heard anything unusual in the past 24 hours.
They hadn't, but the discovery of a body so close to home concerns the couple.
"We recently learned that there have been robberies in the past here that we were not aware of basically because were told that it's not reported --the crime here in Niskayuna. And we were robbed right before Christmas," said Carter.
An autopsy on Wallender's body is being conducted by the Schenectady County Medical Examiner. Police are asking anyone who with any information on his disappearance to contact them.
