Bank robbery in Sharon Springs prompts school into lockout

SHARON SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Schoharie County Sheriff's Department says just after noon on Wednesday, the NBT Bank at the intersection of Routes 10 and 20 in the town of Sharon Springs was robbed, causing the nearby school to go into a lockdown.

The Sharon Springs Central School, across the street from the NBT Bank, was contacted by the Sheriff's Department around 12:20 p.m. and instructed to go into lockdown. Then around 12:35 p.m. the school was told to go into a "lockout" scenario, and will remain that way for the rest of the school day.

Witnesses say the suspect was wearing a hard hat and vest, and left the scene in a black, jeep-like vehicle, according to police.

The NBT bank is now currently closed, as is the adjacent Post Office.

The Sharon Springs Central School says the Girls' and Boys' Modified Games for Wednesday afternoon have been cancelled and all after school activities are cancelled.
