ALBANY, N.Y. – The former roommate of a Colonie woman murdered in New Orleans returned to the Capital Region to mourn with friends and family.
For the last three months, Raechelle Gonzalez was Lauren Tanski's roommate in New Orleans.
"As soon as she got there we started adventuring," she said.
Raechelle says Lauren wanted a new place with more room and she had moved out very recently. "She was brilliant and wanted to write a book," Gonzalez said.
She tearfully reunited with friends after returning to the Capital region Thursday. They held on to each other tightly as they remembered Lauren, who police say was beaten to death earlier this week inside her New Orleans apartment.
Raechelle says her friend was in the wrong place at the wrong time. "She was actually going to move out the next day," she said.
According to police, 39-year-old Henry Dolliole confessed to killing Tanski, 26, after getting into an argument.
Raechelle told NEWS10 Dolliole was an ex-boyfriend of the person Lauren was currently staying with, and Lauren did not know him personally. Police say Dolliole already has an extensive criminal history and is now charged with Frist Degree Murder.
"I wouldn't even call him a guy or a man -- call him a monster," she added.
Rachaelle says she couldn't cope alone, and tonight she's just glad to be back with family and friends.
Lauren's friends are planning to hold a vigil at Dana Park, located at the intersection of Lark St. and Madison Ave., Albany, N.Y. across from Susie's at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
