LexisNexis to shut down Albany office, cut 220 jobs

Posted:

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - LexisNexis says it plans to close down its Matthew Bender law book publishing operations in Albany, eliminating more than 200 jobs.

A notice the company field Tuesday with the state Labor Department says 220 workers will be laid off when Matthew Bender shutters its offices by the end of 2014. The company cited the economy for the closing.

Marc Osborn, a spokesman for LexisNexis, said some employees could be relocated to Matthew Bender's other locations in New York City and Dayton, Ohio.

Matthew Bender, one of the nation's largest publishers of law books, was founded in Albany in 1887. LexisNexis, an affiliate of Anglo-Dutch publisher Reed Elsevier, purchased the publishing company in 1998 from the Times Mirror Co., owner of the Los Angeles Times.
