PHILMONT, N.Y. - Crews in Columbia County worked late into Tuesday night investigating a fire that broke out in the Village of Philmont that has destroyed a historic church.
Fire broke out at the 2nd Reformed Church of Claverak, at 6 Church Street, around 6:30 p.m.destroying the historic church built in the late 1800's, and still remains active with 50 congregants.
New York State Police say the investigation has revealed that the cause of the fire is consistent with being accidental. The fire remains under investigation, however is not considered suspicious at this time.
The Columbia County Fire Coordinators Office, Columbia County Cause and Origin
Team, the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and
Control and the New York State Police assisted the Philmont Fire Department in the investigation, which has concluded at this time.
The incident closed down parts of Main Street and other surrounding roads.
Wednesday, the Village of Philmont has issued a boil water advisory, in effect for 24 hours. There is no need for alarm, but as a result of the Tuesday night church fire, the village wants to take precaution until all tests come back.
