Children removed from Schenectady home where 'unattended death' occurred

Posted: Updated:

SHENECTADY, N.Y -- Police say they pulled two children from a Schenectady home after their mother may have been dead inside for days.

This death has a lot of people in this community asking questions, and now the autopsy has come back ‘inconclusive'.

The woman's identity has not yet been released by officials.

Police confirmed two children were in the home with the body. Lt. Mark McCraken says he believes the children removed from the home were the woman's.

Neighbors say they heard the children crying for days before calling the police, and that they wish someone had done something earlier so the children would have been found.

"Upset, I'm inset no one would call the authorities after hearing kids crying for days. And not do anything about it ya know?" said Jeremiah Perimett.

"I don't know what went on, I just heard it on the news and knew it was close by my home and it breaks my heart to hear that," said Haroon Hasson.

Neighbors told NEWS10 the children's father called 911 after finding the woman unresponsive in the home.

Police confirm that Michael Briggs, a parolee taken in for questioning on Monday in the homicide of former nun, Mary Greco, also lived in this home. Briggs was arrested on parole violations not relating to Greco's death.

Police do not believe the two deaths are connected

A toxicology screen is planned, but there is a chance the woman could have died of natural causes. No word yet on when that report will be released.

The children are in the custody of child protective services.
