SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Scores of protesters are expected to greet gun enthusiasts when they arrived at the Saratoga Springs City Center this weekend for a firearms show.
The Saratogian newspaper reports that three different groups have obtained permits from the city of Saratoga Springs to stage demonstrations outside the downtown City Center during the gun show, organized by Mechanicville-based New Eastcoast Arms Collectors Associates.
One of the groups plans to hold wooden, cutout angels in memory of the victims of last month's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
Some residents of Saratoga Springs have asked city officials to cancel the two-day gun show at the city-owned venue out of respect for the Newtown victims.
However, directors of the Saratoga Springs City Center Authority on Wednesday
rejected requests from about 20 people who sought the cancellation of
the gun show, saying that the event will go on as planned.
Cathy Petronis of New Eastcoast Arms Collectors Associates says that the
group will go along with the request from city officials urging
exhibitors not to display semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity
ammunition magazines similar to the ones used in last month's
Connecticut school shooting.
