HOOSICK, N.Y. - Hospital officials say a 44-year-old Rensselaer County man who shot himself in the head during an armed standoff with police on Monday has died.
Albany Medical Center Hospital says that Keith Gates died Tuesday.
State police said he was in grave condition when he was taken to the hospital following the eight-hour standoff at his home on Route 22 in the town of Hoosick.
Troopers say they were called to the home for a domestic dispute in which Gates fired shots and threatened to hurt others.
When police arrived on scene, Gates made threats toward himself and responding officers and refused to exit the home. State Police crisis negotiators tried talking with Gates for several hours, during which time Gates continued to refuse to exit the home.
After hours of negotiating with Gates, police eventually sent robotic surveillance equipment into the home and found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.
