GRANVILLE, N.Y. - The Washington County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested a man allegedly attempting to purchase a rifle after commenting the weapon may be used to murder various people, including school children.
Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy says 55-year-old Walter Hammond, of Granville, was arrested Friday and charged with Aggravated Harassment 2nd.
Murphy says Hammond had been corresponding by email with a gun dealer in
Pennsylvania
to purchase a rifle. He was frustrated with the time frame it was taking to
complete a federal check in order to purchase the firearm.
In an email to the
dealer, Hammond allegedly made a comment that he may be planning the murders of school
children, firemen and little old ladies and that the rifle may be used as a
murder weapon. The dealer then called the Sheriff's Office to report it.
The investigation revealed no credible threat
that Hammond was actually planning any attacks with firearms.
He was arrested and released on an appearance ticket.
