GRANVILLE, N.Y. - The Washington County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested a man allegedly attempting to purchase a rifle after commenting the weapon may be used to murder various people, including school children.
Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy says 55-year-old Walter Hammond, of Granville, was arrested Friday and charged with Aggravated Harassment 2nd.
Murphy says Hammond had been corresponding by email with a gun dealer in Pennsylvania to purchase a rifle. He was frustrated with the time frame it was taking to complete a federal check in order to purchase the firearm.
In an email to the dealer, Hammond allegedly made a comment that he may be planning the murders of school children, firemen and little old ladies and that the rifle may be used as a murder weapon. The dealer then called the Sheriff's Office to report it.
