NISKAYUNA, N.Y. - A young female was victim to a deadly fire in Niskayuna Friday morning, fire officials tell NEWS10.
Calls came in for the fire around 8:20 a.m. from a neighbor who noticed smoke coming from the home at 2241 Niskayuna Drive.
Niskayuna Deputy Fire Chief S.F. Fiminski, Jr. identified the victim as 14-year-old Grace Kline. He says the young girl was found unconscious inside a first-floor bedroom in the home.
She was transported to Ellis Hospital where she later died.
Kline was alone in the home at the time of the fire, and according to officials, her father arrived on the scene shortly after emergency crews arrived.
She was a student of van Antwerp middle School, and Niskayuna School District officials have activated a crisis management team to assist students and staff.
District Superintendent Susan Kay Salvaggio released the following statement:
"We are all saddened by this tragic loss, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family and friends.
Those who knew Grace best at Van Antwerp said she was a warm light and a friendly face in the hall and in class. She will be remembered as an inquisitive young women, who liked jewelry and music – and showing off a recently-acquired "pixie" haircut.
Immediately upon being notified by local officials, the district mobilized its crisis response team to notify staff and families, and to provide support to any students or staff members who need it.
Grief counselors will continue to be available for students
or staff members who need assistance."
There is no word on the cause of the fire; however it appears to have started in the kitchen. The investigation is ongoing, and fire officials expect no further information to be released until Monday at the earliest.
