GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – A fire was contained to a single
townhouse unit in the Town of Guilderland by the Westmere Fire Dept. Thursday.
At around 4:22 a.m., a neighbor called 911 to report a fire
in a townhouse home at 4058 Chaucer Place in the Town of Guilderland. The
first arriving police unit reported a fully involved structure fire and began
to alert neighbors in the multi-unit townhouse building.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the affected
townhouse unit, but some of the attached units sustained some smoke and water
damage. Fire officials reported that all of the residents were evacuated
from the entire structure until it is determined that the remaining structure
is safe.
One individual was treated for smoke inhalation, and their
condition is not currently available.
Despite the sub-zero temperatures, volunteer firefighters
were able to work quickly to prevent further damage.
According to Chief David Szary, "We are used
to expecting the unexpected and adapting. Our firefighters were all hands
on in both fighting the fire and fighting freezing cold which created some
significant challenges. On mornings like today, we're fighting both fire
and ice."
The Town's Fire Investigation Bureau will examine the scene to
identify a cause and origin of the fire.
