SAUGERTIES, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a Hudson Valley man who led police on a chase New Year's Eve had two loaded guns in his car and is believed to have planned to kill his ex-girlfriend.
Police in the Ulster County village of Saugerties tell local media outlets that they received a call Monday night reporting that a man armed with a shotgun was outside a home making threatening statements.
Officers spotted a car fleeing the scene and gave pursuit. The driver, 63-year-old John Howland of Phoenicia, was arrested in nearby Woostock after being stopped by a police roadblock and spike strips.
Charges against Howland include driving while intoxicated and criminal possession of a weapon.
He's being held in the county jail on $25,00 bail. It couldn't be determined if he had a lawyer.
